An
elderly Chinese woman has been discovered living in a cave for more
than half a century, even though her husband and seven children have all
moved out.
Zhou
Guangsu, 78, said the cave situated in the mountains in rural Guizhou
province is a 'nice place to live', despite the accommodation being what
may politely be described as basic.
She
said that local authorities had built the family a house at the bottom
of the mountain but she refused to move because she preferred living in
the cave, reported People's Daily Online.
Mrs Zhou moved into the cave with her husband more than 50 years ago when they got married.
The couple lived there with their seven children until they all left home as adults.
Mr
Zhou lived there until 2013, at which point he moved into their
youngest son's house at the foot of the mountain because he found it
difficult to get up to the cave.
The 300 square metre cave has been divided up into rooms and has an animal pen and chicken coop inside.
She explained: 'We used to raise cattle and horses in the cave but as we got older we only kept domestic animals.'
The furnishing is very bare and the space is dimly lit with a few light bulbs.
Mrs Zhou gets daily supplies delivered to her by her children, and says she does not get lonely because she always has visitors.
She now lives with her dog and chickens and has no plans to move out.
She
explained that she has always felt safe in the cave, and the only
drawback is that the nearest drinking water is a 300-metre walk away.
